Frequently Asked Questions
What happens during CBT or ACT therapy?
Therapy is collaborative and practical. Together with your therapist, you’ll explore the patterns that may be keeping you stuck, develop greater awareness of your thoughts and emotions, and learn new ways of responding that align with the life you want to live.
Depending on your goals, sessions may include learning new coping strategies, exploring personal values, practicing mindfulness skills, and identifying behaviours that support long-term well-being.
Will I be given homework?
Sometimes. Your therapist may suggest simple exercises or opportunities to practice new skills between sessions. These activities are always collaborative and designed to help you apply what you’re learning in everyday life.
How are CBT and ACT different?
While both approaches are evidence-based, they emphasize different aspects of change.
CBT helps people recognize and challenge unhelpful thinking patterns that contribute to emotional distress. ACT focuses on accepting difficult thoughts and emotions without allowing them to control your actions, while helping you move toward a life guided by your values.
Many therapists thoughtfully integrate elements of both approaches based on each client’s unique needs.
Is CBT or ACT right for everyone?
Every person is unique, and no single approach is right for everyone. At Inner Life Psychotherapy + Healing Collective, our therapists draw from a variety of evidence-based approaches and tailor therapy to your individual goals, personality, and experiences. If another therapeutic approach would better support your needs, we’ll incorporate that into your care.
How long does CBT or ACT therapy take?
The length of therapy depends on your goals and the concerns you’re addressing. Some people experience meaningful progress within a relatively short period of time, while others choose longer-term therapy to deepen self-understanding and create lasting change.
Do you offer virtual CBT and ACT therapy?
Yes. We offer secure virtual therapy for clients throughout Ontario, as well as in-person appointments at our Milton office. Both options provide effective, confidential, and compassionate care.
Every Pattern Has a Story
The thoughts, emotions, and behaviours that feel overwhelming today didn’t develop in isolation.
Many of the patterns that keep us stuck once served a purpose. They may have helped us cope, stay safe, or navigate difficult experiences. Over time, however, those same patterns can begin to limit our lives, relationships, and sense of well-being.
Whatever your story, change is possible.
At Inner Life Psychotherapy + Healing Collective, we believe lasting growth begins with understanding—not judgment. Together, we’ll explore the patterns that no longer serve you, develop practical skills for responding differently, and help you build a life that reflects what matters most to you.
Healing isn’t about becoming a different person. It’s about gaining the freedom to respond with greater awareness, flexibility, and intention.
Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, stress, perfectionism, or simply feeling stuck, we’d be honoured to walk alongside you.
